Welcome to NNF Tamil Nadu

Tamilnadu state branch of national neonatology forum was the brain child of the then doyens in pediatrics who fore thought neonatology as a speciality by itself in the early 80s. Dr.Nagasamy , Dr.Jayam , Dr.C.Thirugnasambandam , Dr,K .G.Kamala and Dr.Gopal were the initial torch bearers making Tamilnadu as one of the early state branches of Central NNF. Tamil nadu hosted the 3rd annual NNF convention in Chennai way back in 1983 under their leadership. Following their footsteps Tamilnadu NNF was taken to greater heights by Dr.R. Shanmugasundaram , Dr.Prabhakar , Dr.Gita and Dr.T.L.Rathnakumari and Dr.Kumutha by recruiting more members, holding annual state conferences and city neonatology meets which are still continuing. A statewide training program in neonatal advanced life support (NALS) was widely conducted among the doctors under the leadership of Dr.R.Shanmugasundaram to improve the delivery room care of neonates and birth asphyxia which is an important contributor to neonatal mortality was reduced. Dr.DharmapuriVidyasagar from USA was also a key person in establishing the state branch. Tamil Nadu hosted the national convention again in 1994 under the leadership of Dr.G.Prabhakar who is another key person in nurturing the Tamil Nadu state branch .

TNNNF became a registered body as “The Neonatology association of Tamilnadu” we have a PAN number and Dr.Ashokan ,Dr.T.L.Rathnakumari , Dr.Gita and Dr.Kumutha played a crucial role in the 90s.TN NNF office premises was opened in a Flat situated in Egmore,Chennai thanks to the efforts of Dr.Gitaand Dr.ArasarSeeralar and many TNNNF members contributed for the same .At the time NRHM was introduced by the Govt of India and the neonatal care was strengthened in the rural and urban region by the SNCU and CeMoNC units which gained popularity in serving the needy and Dr.Kumutha played a crucial role in standardizing them and was carried forward by Dr.Srinivasan in TamilNadu state .This further reduced the NMR to below the national average in early 2000. Neonatal resuscitation program was standardized by the National neonatology forum as NR India and the module helped us to standardize the provider course and train more doctors and nurses were certified as NRP providers by the Academic coordinator -Dr,Manikandan. Tamil nadu also leads in a higher number of NRP faculty . TN NNF hosted the annual convention for the third time in 2011 under the leadership of Dr.Arasarseeralar, Dr.Ashokan and Dr.BinuNinan in Chennai. Tamil Nadu is the forerunner in robust training of the nurses in the PHC, facility based newborn care FBNC module was constructed and Dr.Vijaikumar ,and nurses Akiladevi and Ms . Shanti with the aid of UNICEF and Ekam foundation is still ongoing in full swing. Office bearers were nominated /Elections held every two years and Dr.Prabhakar took the role as election officer for the smooth conduct till date. The first annual CME of TNNNF was introduced last year by Dr.Arasar and Dr.Srinivasan an academic feast for postgraduates and which is to carried forward as an annual eventTNNNF has members one of the large body next only to New Delhi.By our robust healthcare system across the length and breadth of the state we have our single digit NMR - which is well below the national average.
